പണ്ടേ ഹോസ്റ്റല്‍ നിവാസികളും നാട്ടുകാരുമായി അത്ര രസത്തിലല്ല. സ്വന്തം തട്ടകത്തില്‍ കിടക്കുകളിയ്ക്കുന്ന വരത്തന്മാരോട് കലിപ്പുതോന്നുന്നത് സ്വാഭാവികം. ക്ലബ് എഫ്.എമ്മും ബെസ്റ്റ് എഫ്.എമ്മും ഒന്നും വരുന്നതിനും വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുന്‍പേ സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു സം‌‌പ്രേഷണനിലയമുണ്ടാക്കി അണ്‍സെന്‍സേര്‍ഡ് ഗാനങ്ങളുടെ തത്സമസം‌‌പ്രേഷണം നടത്തിയ ചരിത്രമുണ്ട്. സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളായിപ്പോയില്ലേ....അഹമ്മതി കാണിച്ചാ‍ലും ഹൈട്ടെക്കേ കാണിക്കൂ.സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളായിപ്പോയില്ലേ....

പാതിരാത്രിയായാലും കിടന്നുറങ്ങാതെ അലഞ്ഞുതിരിയല്‍, ഉച്ചത്തിലുള്ള പുറത്തുപറയാന്‍ കൊള്ളാവുന്നതും അല്ലാത്തതുമായ സംസാരം, കൂക്കുവിളി, പ്രകമ്പനം കൊള്ളിയ്ക്കുന്ന ശബ്ദകോലാഹങ്ങളോടെയുള്ള ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രദര്‍ശനം. നാട്ടുകാര്‍ക്കു കിടന്നുറങ്ങേണ്ടേ. ആര്‍ക്കാണെങ്കിലും ദേഷ്യം വരില്ലേ?

അതുകൊണ്ട് നാട്ടിലെ തണ്ടും തടിയുമുള്ളവര്‍ ഹോസ്റ്റലില്‍ വന്നും ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുക (തല്ലിയകാര്യം പുറത്തു പറയരുതല്ലോ!), അത്ര തണ്ടും തടിയുമില്ലാ‍ത്തവര്‍ ഒളിച്ചും പാത്തും കല്ലെറിയുക തുടങ്ങിയ കലാപരിപാടികള്‍ കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളില്‍ നടന്നു പോന്നിരുന്നു.

ആയിടയ്ക്ക് ഹോസ്റ്റല്‍ മെസ്സ് സാമ്പത്തിക മാന്ദ്യം അനുഭവിയ്ക്കുകയും, അതിനുപിന്നില്‍ ചിലസാമ്പത്തിക ക്രമക്കേടുകളുണ്ടോ ഇല്ലയോ എന്ന സംശയത്തെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് അന്വേഷണത്തിനു വിധേയമാവുകയും, അന്വേഷണാത്മകമായി അടച്ചിടുകയും ചെയ്തു. മാത്രമോ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളുടെ അകമഴിഞ്ഞ സഹകരണം കൊണ്ട് അടുത്തുള്ള ടോപ്പ് ഫൊം എന്ന ഹോട്ടലിനും ഏതാണ്ട് ഇതേ അവസ്ഥനേരിടേണ്ടി വരുകയും നഷ്ടത്തിലായി അടച്ചുപൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. അക്കാരണംകൊണ്ട് തൃക്കാക്കര അമ്പലം വരെപോയി ചോയിസ് എന്നപേരില്‍ അവിടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിരുന്ന ഹോട്ടലില്‍ നിന്ന് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിയ്ക്കാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിതരാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഒരിയ്ക്കല്‍ ചോയിസില്‍ നിന്നും പൊറോട്ടയും ബീഫും കഴിച്ചിട്ട് തിരിച്ചു നടക്കുന്നു. സമയം പത്തുമണിയോടടുക്കുന്നു രാത്രി. ഞാനും, പാണ്ടിയും, ടി.പിയും പിന്നെ ആരെക്കെയോ ഉണ്ട് സംഘത്തില്‍. അഞ്ചാറു പേരുടെ സംഘം. ഏതോ ഒരു ലോക്കല്‍ ടീം ബൈക്കില്‍ പറപ്പിച്ചു പോയപ്പോള്‍ ടീ.പി “ഠോ” എന്നൊരു ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കി. ബൈക്കുകാര്‍ ഒന്നു നിറുത്തി രൂക്ഷമായി ഒന്നു തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കി. ഇരുട്ടില്‍ രൂക്ഷതയുടെ തോത് മനസിലാകുമായിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും അതത്ര പന്തിയായ നോട്ടമായിരുന്നില്ല. വീണ്ടൂം വണ്ടി സ്റ്റാര്‍ട്ടാക്കി അവര്‍ മുന്‍‌‌പോട്ടു പോകാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതായിരുന്നു അവര്‍.

പിന്നേ കോളേജു പിള്ളാരോടാ കളി. ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൂടി “ഠോ ...ഠോ...”

ലവന്മാരു വണ്ടി ഞങ്ങളുടെ നേര്‍ക്കു തിരിച്ചു.

ടി.പിയ്ക്ക് അന്നു മീശമുളച്ചിട്ടില്ലാഞ്ഞതിനാലും ഉള്ളതില്‍ തണ്ടു തടിയും തോന്നിയ്ക്കുന്നത് പാണ്ടിയ്ക്കായതിനായും ഉള്ള തെറി മുഴുവന്‍ പാണ്ടി കേട്ടു. വായില്‍ കോലിട്ടുകുത്തിയാല്‍ കടിയ്ക്കാത്ത പാവം പാണ്ടിയെ ഏതോ ഒരുത്തല്‍ ക്രൂരവും പൈശാചികവുമായി അസഭ്യം പറയുന്നതു കണ്ട് ഞങ്ങളെല്ലാം ഞാനൊന്നുമറിഞ്ഞില്ലേ രാമനാരായണ എന്ന ഭാവത്തില്‍ നിന്നു.

ഠ വട്ടത്തില്‍ കിടന്നു കളിയ്ക്കുന്ന ലോക്കത്സുമായി തായംകളിയ്ക്കാന്‍ ഹോസ്റ്റലേര്‍സ് തയ്യാറല്ല എന്നല്ല, താത്പര്യമില്ല. ഡയോഡും ട്രാന്‍‌സിറ്ററും ഇട്ടമ്മാനമാടുന്ന സര്‍ക്യൂട്ട് ലാബുകളിലേയ്ക്ക് കയ്യിലും കാലിലും ചുറ്റിക്കെട്ടുമായി ചെന്നുകേറാന്‍ താത്പര്യമില്ല. അത്ര തന്നെ.

But eventually it turned out be great day in the office due to the stellar performances of team with both bat and ball...all matches were 10 Over affairs with no field restrictions.....

First match Vs NTTF, Thalassery (First Round)

We knew this was going to be a tough contest against the young guns from NTTF.. We were hoping that our Captain Kamal will win the toss... We decided beforehand that we will put the opposition in if we win the toss... and the toss went according to our wishes…. Since the matches were played on "Soft Tennis Ball", it was not easy to predict " how much will be a good defendable total"...So we thought that it will be better idea to chase even though it is somewhat against the conventional wisdom of batting first and put some runs on the board... Our opening bowlers Kamal & Stanley were spot on and didn’t allow the batsman to break free... Sai Krishnan, Subash, Abhilash & Ashin (aka Ajayan) were the other 4 bowlers.... Sreejith, Opener of the opposition team tried to charge down against Kamal in the very first over and he was not successful and managed only a single with that shot... We were able to take wickets at regular intervals put a check on their scoring rate... one point was that the opposition batters took many risky singles inside the ring(even though there was no inner circle officially )......We got the stranglehold of the proceedings and they were not able to score even a single boundary... and just one extra ( 1 wide) was given by our bowlers... we restricted them to 46 for 9 in 10 Overs... and Abhilash who bowled the last over got 4 wickets in that one over spell. After a 5 minutes break, we started the chase... the start was not good for us..we were reduced to 7 for 2 inside 2 Overs and both the openers were back in the hut... NTTF's bowling and fielding was sharp... they didn’t allow any freebies...and we were forced to work hard for every single run.. Ajayan & Kamal got a partnership going and we were back in the hunt...Ajayan was not able make use a Free Hit, but he hit 2 Fours later to keep the RR under control...But Kamal got out at a crucial time...after that 3 more wickets fell...and in the end, it was up to Joju & Stanley to seal the deal..around 7 runs were required from the final 2 Overs... and Joju pinched a crucial 2 runs off the last ball of the penultimate over after hitting the ball to the vacant offside field and we were almost there.. and just 3 runs were required in the last over... NTTF's opening bowler Binu bowled the last over, but we were able to finish it off within 2 balls... We were home by 4 wickets with 4 balls to spare....


2nd match Vs 'B' team of NSS College of Engineering, PKD (Semi Final)

To speak the truth, this was a mismatch… a stroll in the park for us… we were pitted against a team of old warhorses… it was drizzling when the match was about to start.. Once again Kamal won the toss and we decided to bowl first on a damp & muddy pitch.. the conditions were overcast and it continued to drizzle for while when the match started…We knew that we were only one match away from winning Rs 5000/-.. but that didn’t get to our heads…we were there to enjoy our cricket… Our bowlers reduced them to 16 for 9 by 7th Over… and then I got a chance to bowl one over for the first time in the series… I gave away 5 runs in that over and they were bowled for 21 in that over… In our bowling, Stanley got 4 wickets and he was on a hat-trick once…. There was one hilarious incident during our bowling… One Uncle aged around 60 year old came out to the middle and his middle stump was uprooted in the very first ball he faced from Stanley… and he was angrily telling that “You should not bowl at the stumps, the stumps are there for you to avoid bowling in that area..” We are not able to control our laughter even though we didn’t show it outside… Our openers Abhilash & Joseph knocked the runs off with the minimum of fuss inside 2 Overs and won the match by 10 wickets…. Even though we won the match convincingly, we didn’t get good practice for the finals…

Final Match Vs 'A' team of NSS College of Engineering, PKD

We were playing this tournament for the first time and reaching the final itself was a big achievement for us… We decided that there should not be any complacency due to the mediocre show by the opposition team in the Semi final…We knew that if we give our best, we can go all the way to the big prize… For the 3rd time in row, Kamal won the toss and we stuck to the strategy of inserting the opposition in and chasing down the target... Kamal is the new MSD when it comes to toss J :P…The start was brilliant for us.. Due to some superb fielding efforts, NSS ‘A” was reduced to 5 for 3 after 2 Overs… all the 3 wickets came in the form of run outs… and then came the opposition captain Shyam (some guys said he is a state player)…we knew getting his wicket quickly was going to be crucial… since we saw his batting in the previous match, we had some plans for him… long leg , deep square leg and deep mid wicket was in place for him when Ajayan was bowling to him… after a brief partnership of around 20 runs he fell into our trap and was caught at long leg by Subash off Ajayan’s bowling … the match was turned on it’s head in our favour…but still plenty of work had to be done.. the next batter hit a SIX over my head (deep square leg) off Ajayan’s bowling when Ajayan attempted the same short ball in which he got their captain… but in the very next ball, Ajayan had his revenge and the batsman was clean bowled… the score was 33 for 5… in the end, we were able to reduce them 49 for 8 in 10 Overs… exactly 5 runs were required per over for us to win the Final…Once again like in the first match, our start was not good… Abhilash was caught at deep square leg , Joseph was caught behind and we were reduced to 6 for 2 in the 2nd over…Ajayan came at one down and Kamal at 2 down..we needed a good partnership to stay in the match…the runs were coming easily and the score read 12 for 2 after 2 overs, 21 for 2 after 3, 26 for 2 after 4 and 31 for 2 after 5 Overs… in the 3rd over, mid on was inside ring and Ajayan went over the mid on fielder and hit a FOUR… Shyam, the opposition captain, who was fielding at mid on immediately pushed himself back to long realizing the importance of more wickets at this stage… during this partnership, Kamal had hit a SIX off a free hit after an NSS bowler overstepped…15 was still required when Kamal got out..and Ravi also got out soon..But Ajayan stayed till the end and hit the winning runs to add to his tally of 3 wickets while bowling earlier and we won the match by 6 wickets…Virtually a Man of the Match performance,,,,Opposition captain Shyam didn’t bowl till the start of 8th over… since RR was manageable enough that tactic didn’t work out… we saw him off with singles and twos… in the end, it was a great team effort to win the trophy…
